"It’s easy to believe that "cancel culture" doesn’t exist if all your thoughts adhere to the fashionable ideas of the moment", writes the British cultural commentator Ayishat Akanbi on Twitter. Akanbi, who also works as a fashion stylist, writer, and artist, is highly critical of so-called identity politics and the concept of "wokeness" that goes along with it. She regularly shares thoughts on social media that criticise contemporary social justice activism in favour of a more open and unifying political and societal outlook on life that is based on inclusiveness and empathy towards the other.
