Description

In our digitally mediated post-modern world, what sound to be natural and immediate experience may be instantaneously "schizophonic". In this performance, the pianist Masafumi improvises open air with not only the amibient sounds of Kyoto but also those sent from Zurich and the whole sonic experience is then remixed by Saburo into a 4-speaker immersive sonic space and fed back to Zurich.

Saburo HIRANO is a Professor at the Faculty of Media Creation, Kyoto SEIKA University. He holds Master of Design and Doctor of Engneering. He started his artistic activities during his undergraduate days, creating sound tracks for video art and computer graphics. He then worked at YAMAHA corporation as a software engineer, while collaborating with video artists, media artists and CG artists as a sound track designer and system designer. In recent years, he works on the subject of the interaction between image, sound and human movement. His works consist not only of image and sound but also of software and interactive system design.

Masafumi KOMATSU was born in 1971, Miyazu, Kyoto. Completed postgraduate studies at Osaka University (Graduate School of Engineering, Department of Environmental Engineering). His activities focus on 'sound' as more than just music. Specialised in auditory ecology and psychoacoustics, he creates background music and environmental music, and also plays the piano. He has provided and directed music for many film works, including those directed by Kawase Naomi. He has also designed sound environments for public spaces such as Kyoto Tower, Kyoto International Manga Museum, Kyoto Tango Railway and Mimihara General Hospital.
