Since 2019, Seraina Dür and Jonas Gillmann live and work together with thirteen pigeons in different theatre and art spaces. As an inter-species company, they are interested in the question of how spaces can be designed – especially spaces which are caring to both human and non-human inhabitants.
In their common settings, they create condensations of everyday life, in which a slight shift of the supposedly familiar takes place.
Seraina Dür and Jonas Gillmannwill develop the preparation for Happening #4 with 10 students of the practice field of theater pedagogy at the Zurich University of the Arts.
Seraina Dür (*1978) and Jonas Gillmann (*1983) are an artist duo from Zurich and Basel whose works are created at the intersection of installation, performance and discourse. Together with initially four, then five, and now thirteen pigeons, they are an inter-species performance company; together they work on the multi-part project Parliament of Things, Animals, Plants and Algorithms since 2018.
In their work, they create performative and installative settings in which tender relationships between humans and non-humans can be practiced. Their spaces have the label of an Architecture of Care. For them, the term represents an urgent desire for a more careful and less violent approach to the damaged environment in which we are all entangled.
Parliament of Things, Animals, Plants and Algorithms is created in cooperation with Theater Neumarkt Zurich; so far the following editions have been realized: Theater as a pigeon loft (2019, Neumarkt Zurich), Agilitypark (2020, Neumarkt Zurich), Pigeon room (2021, Helmhaus Zurich), Rough Love (2021, Theater Basel), Practicing Tenderness (2021, Venice Architecture Biennale) and Architecture of Care (2021, Lecture).
Seraina Dür teaches in the Master Theater Mediation at the Zurich University of the Arts and produces own artistic works. Jonas Gillmann works as a freelance dramaturg and teaches as a guest lecturer at HEAD Geneva and Propädeutikum Biel.
This Happening #4 is organsied by the Socially Engaged Arts group from Social Transformation.
